Evaluation of benzodiazepines use in São Paulo
Abstract
Benzodiazepines are controlled medications provided free of charge by the Unified Health System (SUS). They are central nervous system inhibitors and are used for the treatment of anxiety, depression, panic attacks, among other disorders. This class of drugs is widely prescribed around the world despite the known harmful effects of its long-term use. The chronic use of benzodiazepines can lead to tolerance and dependence, so consumption should not exceed a period of 6 weeks. The objective of this article was to analyze the consumption of Clonazepam and Diazepam in the municipality of Viradouro, in the interior of the state of São Paulo, the Defined Daily Dose (DDD) was calculated, as well as tracing the sociodemographic profile of the users. The number of Clonazepam and Diazepam users, gender, age and dose used in 2019 were collected by the Municipal Pharmacy's computer system. A DDD of 12.26 inhabitants/day for Diazepam was found of 3.40 inhabitants/day to Clonazepam. Of the users, 67% were women and 39% were elderly. Chronic use of benzodiazepines was observed in 10% of patients who used these drugs in 2019. The DDD for Diazepam and Clonazepam found in Viradouro are of concern, since benzodiazepines cause dependence and unwanted side effects.
