Abstract

Whooping cough, an infectious disease affecting the respiratory system, is the fifth leading cause of mortality from vaccine-preventable diseases in children under five years old. The aim of this study was to compare the temporal evolution of data completeness of reported cases of the disease in the SINAN (Brazilian Notifiable Diseases Information System) across the five Brazilian regions from 2007 to 2020. During the analyzed period, the disease more frequently affected females, white individuals, and those under 5 years old. The majority of cases resulted in recovery. The completeness of data regarding residence zone, age group, age group under one year, gender, pregnancy status, and confirmation criteria remained consistently excellent to very good across all regions. Data regarding race/ethnicity remained consistently very good to excellent in the northern and southern regions but fluctuated between regular and poor in the other regions, which could hinder the understanding of demographic risk factors for illness. The evolution of cases showed completeness ranging from very good to excellent in the south, southeast, and northeast, regular to poor in the central-west, and very good to poor in the north, which is unfavorable for calculating cure and death rates. Despite good completeness in most demographic variables during the period, it is important to highlight the need for improving the quality of records in the northern, northeastern, and central-western regions, which showed lower completeness of essential data, indicating the necessity for greater attention from managers and preparation of healthcare professionals to ensure proper and effective recording.
